I'm being transferred!

Woke up in the morning, waiting for the call. I"m so nervous I could hardly sleep at all! Phone rings answer the phone "Hello Elders, how are you today? You've been there for quite a while its time your on your way" I"m being transferred! Say good bye to all the members! Please forward all my letters, Thats the life of an elder oh yeah!

That's the song we like to sing when someone is being transferred, called "I"m being transferred"....TOO BAD IT DOESN'T APPLY TO ME!! I'll be here another 6 weeks. Dry Creek forever. On the bright side though I"ll have a nice Christmas with all the people I love! There is a GOOD reason the Lord wants me to be here!! I"ll have been here just 2 days short of 11 months by the end of this transfer. Crazy. thats my spiel for this week.

Love you all.

SO.MUCH.FOOD!

Happy December!

Well another crazy week has come and gone in the life of a missionary! This week held another round of great adventure!
I've started to see the Christmas season pop up all around me, from various Christmas lights to handing ornaments and even the first Christmas tree! One of the members we visited had a beautiful 9ft tree with white lights and red decorations. I have to admit I was a little sad I wouldn't be decorating a tree this year. But because the Lord continually sheds his mercy on His missionaries my companion and I were blessed to have been the recipients of our very own tree! The family I've lived with for the past 9 months are all angels of God. They've always taken time to make sure we're comfortable and included in their family. This week their children knocked on our door and had a 5ft tree in hand with a bag of colored lights and bag of odds and ends ornaments...with gold tinsel! What made me squeal the most was when my companion let me decorate the whole thing by myself (she knows I love to decorate so she watched and admired from the side)! Having been taught by pros, I'd say that little tree looks pretty darn good. Not the prettiest tree, but enough to warm my heart!
On Thanksgiving we had a whirl wind of appointments. 6 meals. 2 sisters. 1 stomach! Our stops are as follows:

8 am- Breakfast with Bishop. Chocolate milk, cinnamon rolls, eggs and toast. (ate it like a champ)
11am- 1st Dinner with a single sister and her mother. Sprite, stuffing, turkey and veggies. (still in my A game)
2pm- 2nd Dinner with Ward Mission leader and his family. Apple Cider, turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, butternut squash, rolls and jell-o. (still eating like a pro)
4pm- 1st dessert with new move in family. Eclair cake. (slowing down a bit)
5pm- 3rd dinner with favorite family. Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potato, green bean casserole, and rolls. pie to take home (having a hard time chewing and swallowing).
6pm- final house. 2nd dessert. cheesecake and pie (so sick of eating food. but stomach isn't too angry.)

Disgusting right? Please don't loose all respect for me. People just love to feed us in this area.

We also had an awesome adventure going to the zoo this week! Whoop whoop! We got to go see "Zoo Lights" at night which were pretty cool for Christmas. It was a great day with our recent convert family and their son who's still investigating.

Over all it was an awesome adventure filled week! What a blessing it is to serve the Lord in this time! Hora for Israel!

Octopus

Heres when I ate the Octopus. As you can see the elder in the background cheering me on...so gross!

What a ride!

To those reading this blog...sorry about the gaps in Sister LeStarge's letters. I'll be better about posting them.

Happy Monday everyone!

Sheesh, these weeks just seem to absolutely fly by! This Sunday will be the 9th month I've been out! That's half way! Amazing. Well this week was an absolute Roller coaster!  So many Highs and Lows. I've decided I've got to stop trying to predict what the Lord has in store because I've just got no idea!
This past Tuesday was a fun one. My companion and I started it by going to lunch with the Elders after District meeting. They chose a Japanese restaurant and we went along. I was telling one of the Elders how easy I am with eating and trying new foods, so he decided we'd try something new! Boiled baby Octopus! He picked out one for himself and one for me! The little guys were only a little bigger than my thumb. It wasn't like calamari... because I like that. These little babies we're whole, with a head and rolled in arms! The elder ate his like a champ but when it came to my turn I couldn't even look at it to pick it up! I popped the little guy in my mouth, chewed him up...then spit him right back out! It was so gross! At first it was chewy but then came some crunchy! I just wasn't prepared mentally! And I felt pressured with all kind of elders sitting around me saying "You can do it Sister LeStarge, your tough!" or "Sister LeStarge you've got this!" so much pressure....They we're proud though in the end, and I can't say I didn't try.
Later that day we were really excited for a lesson with one of our investigators, we even had our ward mission leader and his wife coming! We went to his house and he wasn't home! So we called him and he dropped us! He explained life was a little hectic right now and he'd like for us to give him about a month. We'll go back. Instead of teaching him we went to our only other investigator to set up an appointment to meet with him. When we got to his house he asked us to come back after Christmas when he'd be less busy with school! NOO! Dropped by our only two investigators in one day!  We were ready for that day to be over!
On Thursday we celebrated my companions Birthday, which was really on Friday. We had dinner scheduled with this sweet elderly couple in the ward and when we reminded them about dinner we said "Sister Haw's birthday is on Friday!" they thought we said Thursday and we didn't have the heart to tell them it was on Friday, they were just so excited to celebrate her birthday! They even baked her a cake! We just couldn't tell them...poor sweet old members! We then celebrated her birthday again Friday! Which I think was less than exciting because its our planning day but she had a good time visiting some families at night.
On Saturday we had an awesome experience that built my testimony to listen to the subtle promptings of the spirit. We were running out of places to go, because parents weren't home and people were gone out and about. After leaving another members home who were unavailable to meet at the time, I felt a prompting to visit a certain sister in the ward. I talked it over with my companion and we were on our way. I was a little nervous because she and here husband weren't always home and they lived in a different part of our area. We found lights on as we drove by and said a quick prayer asking the Lord for this prompting to be true. Upon knocking on her door we found her home, but immediately noticed tears streaming down her face. She expressed she was having a hard night but invited us in anyway. We asked her if there was anything we could do but she insisted there wasn't. So we offered her all we could, a simple hug. She invited us to sit down and informed us she was worried about one of her sons. We listened and distracted her with questions about the upcoming holidays until her husband came home and could give her the comfort she needed. I am so blessed to have had this experience and to have felt the promptings of the spirit. Its all too often missionaries forget they have the spirit with them always, we just get use to it. I am grateful I was able to feel and listen to the prompting I had. I know we all can get these promptings as we slow down and listen to our hearts.

Have a Happy thanksgiving everyone!

Priesthood is the Best

Hello!

We had an awesome Sunday yesterday! The father of our family and his youngest son got the Priesthood!!! First the father got it from one of our mission leaders then he had the opportunity to give it to his son! He teared up a bit while giving him a blessing at the end and so I teared up too! It was so precious! I love their family and I'm amazed everyday with how rapidly they're progressing in the gospel! I love them! We also had a nerve racking experience in sacrament. Just before church started I looked back then leaned over to my companion and whispered "Sister Sims, President Gelwix and his wife just walked in"  Ah! President you can't just surprise missionaries like that! All of sacrament meeting we were pouring over possibilities as to why he was there! It turned out he was there for a talk a return missionary was giving, because the missionary served in the same mission as Presidents son. We were so terrified though!

Other than that we tract for hours on end!

Love you all!

Biking!

We still bike every week.

I can't remember if I sent these but I'm feeding the Calaway's pets!

Super Bowl of Baptisms!!

Sister Sims and I getting ready for Brayden's Baptism!

The Calaways with The Hutchens Family, who introduced them to the Gospel but moved to Utah.
They flew in to baptize them!

Justin Hutchens, Elder Urban, Dave, Cannon, Cierra, Caylie, Kim, Sister LeStarge, Sister Sims

WE BAPTIZED 6 PEOPLE THIS WEEK!!!!

Sister Sims and I had an incredible week filled with baptisms. We baptized our 10 year old investigator Wednesday night and our family on Saturday night! The first baptism was more something we set up for because they family made the program. We were so excited though when his Grandfather baptized him! He will be confirmed this comming Sunday because he was out of town for the Sunday following his baptism. We can't wait for him!
Saturday night was probably one of the best days of my life! We got to baptize a family! We were a little more invoved with this one because we made the program! It went like this:

Song
Prayer
Musical Number
Talk on Baptisms
Baptisms
"Half time show"
Musical number
Talk on Holy Ghost
Musical number
Welcoming
Song
Prayer
Now I'm not trying to brag or anything but it was called "The Super Bowl of Baptisms". It deserves that title! Did you see we had three musical numbers?! The talks were incredible too!! Although they had a fantastic turn out of over 100 people the greatest part was when they went in the water. They went in order of Father, Mother, Daughter, Daughter, Son. I think everyone in the room was tearing up, even me! When one of their daughters came up out of the water she asked "What is this feeling?" ITS THE SPIRIT! That's when I lost it! This is how the Gospel is suppose to be! Families getting baptized! Making covenants together! Changing their lives together! Its beautiful! This family has changed my life and the spirit has changed theirs, I am so blessed to have been a part of their baptism. They were also confirmed one after another on Sunday. What an extraordinary time to witness each one receive the Holy Ghost and be blessed. But wait! It didn't stop there! After Sacrement the Mother and Father asked my companion and I "Where are the tithing slips?" I almost started balling again! What an amazing obedient family! The Lord prepared them! I got to hear the Father bear his testimony on tithing that he gained from watching his Grandfather pay tithing for years. He fell in love with the way the church distributes its tithing and knows its a commandment of the Lord. I also got to hear him bear testimony of prophets he said "I know Mr. Monson is a prophet" Mr. Monson! I love that! He went on to explain how he loves that we have prophets in the Latter Days, that the Lord loves us enough to send us a guide. I wish you could all grasp the idea of  how incredible this family is!
While at their Baptism the bishop warned them not to fall away from the church because of imperfect member's who may offend them. Someone corrected the family on their clothing (which for some members of the family was the best they had). That night the wife went out and bought a dress for herself to wear to church the next day! Took everything I had not to chew out that member for her correction. People learn in time what our standards of dress are, you just need to give them a little time. I love this families desire to be obedient though! On Sunday the Mother realized she forgot to buy a slip for her dress! So with her desire to keep the Sabbath day holy she sent her Son who wasn't baptized to the store! Haha! That's what I call a loop hole...We can't wait to have this family progress toward the temple together! In two weeks we hope for them to get in and do some baptisms for the dead. We heard that if a family makes it to the temple 2 weeks after baptism its a 100% retention rate! We will get them to the temple in the next two weeks! Especially if their already paying tithing! I love being a missionary and I love having the mere privileged of serving the Lord in his vineyard!

Reaching the Ward's Goal

Hey everyone!
This week is going to be awesome in Dry Creek! Sister Sims and I will be baptizing 6 people!! Our bishop made a goal at the beginning of the year to baptize 6 people and the stake president told him to re-evaluate and come up with a more realistic goal. Our bishop persisted and now we're reaching that goal! The Lord's work is moving forward! On Wednesday night we'll be baptizing our 10 year old investigator! We're so excited because he's be waiting for so many months! We're even more excited to baptize our family on Saturday! Our ward has been so great to take them in and they've offered all they can to help! Our biggest worry is that our the father of the family won't have a jumpsuit to wear! He's 6'8 and a big guy! We're going to call the temple to see if we can use one of theirs! We're so excited though!
We got to spend the 4th with our family! They're the greatest. They made us these really yummy tacos with this cut of steak that was so good! And I don't even like tacos! So you know it had to be good! We tracted for a few hours on the forth and it was the most brutal thing ever! SO HOT OUTSIDE! We got into a few peoples homes but we didn't get to teach them. I think they just had mercy on us. We'll go back in a few weeks and say hello again. Its hard for my companion to tract because so many people reject us, so we often stop and take a "crying break". She usually feels a lot better after but it makes me worry I'll be asking for  "crying break" when I hit 11 months in. nah. I'll be okay.
The work is hard and the days are long but I love the work! I always panic when I think about how much time I have left! In two months I'll only have a year!! I love you all and I miss you!

Love,
Sister LeStarge

Transfers

Hey Everyone!
We survived transfers!! Sister Sims and I have another 6 weeks together! Best.News.Ever. We're really blessed and fortunate! Of all the missionaries in our zone (10 companionships total with 2 trios) the Zone leader (my favorite Elders) along with Sister Sims and I were the only ones who stayed together! All other companionships got split up! Our zone was slaughtered. We're so blessed though because we get to baptize the whole Calaway family!!!! July 13th is their date! Their friend who introduced them to the gospel (who has recently moved to Utah) will be flying in to baptize them! I love their family! For the 4th we'll be teaching them a lesson, going bowling with them (we have permission to do so) then painting their daughters bedroom! A whole day with the Calaways! Its a miracle! Yesterday we ate our second dinner of the evening with them. Right before we went into their house I made a comment and Sister Sims laughed so hard she threw up our first dinner! No better way to make room for the second dinner than by loosing the first right? Gross. We'll also be baptizing our 11 year old investigator  on July 11th! The following Sunday we'll have 7 confirmations!! The Lord is blowing this area out of the water! We're so blessed! We're also incedibly blessed to have listened to the broadcast last week from the General Authority! Our members are really responding to their call! I love this area and I'm so grateful to stay here. However we know next transfer one of us will have to move.
I've decided I could never live in California because its a blazing furnace...This week its suppose to be over 105 everyday...our leaders won't let us ride our bikes. This past week we went out tracting (we've tracted about 70% of our area now) and I swear I was sweating buckets. California is too hot. On Sunday we went tracting and a man denied us water then shut the door! rude. Good thing we have members all over that take good care of us. I like to think that we have the most member trust in our whole mission!
Ah! I'm so excited to see Ben and Jen got a puppy! Its so little! I hope they name him Gus, that's a cute name for the little guy! We'll I guess he won't get that big so I'll see him when he's still small! I love this work and I love the Gospel! I am so blessed to have people to share the gospel with! One of our mission mottos is "Never Quit, Never Surrender"!

Flesh Eating Skin Disease

Hey Family!

I'm so glad to hear of the great miracles the Lord has blessed our family with! What a great blessing Jenna and the kids are alright! That's a bummer that old goat ran into her...but its a blessing to see the Lords had in all things. I'm so grateful little Jonah is okay! He's a little stud watching his cartoons and getting all his snacks while he can, not too sure many 3 year old's know how to do that.
Thanks for sending me a package mom, I'm sure i'll get it soon, thanks for putting a few dollars into my account too! We went out to eat as a zone this week and one elder forgot his wallet! I was the only one willing to cover him so I got a little behind on money this month...
That so exciting Joey goes into the MTC this week! Welcome to chaos Joe...I didn't know Ethan got his call to Brazil! Crazy, we just lost one of my favorite elders to Brazil, his visa finally came, but the Lord needs his missionaries all over the world! Well we all better pray he doesn't have Lyme's disease, that would be super inconvenient...speaking of diseases I'm breaking out all over my body in little bumps! They itch like crazy!  I don't think its a disease but its some kind of allergic reaction. I already had the mission nurse look at it and she thinks its a reaction too, we just have to figure out to what?
I'm so excited you were able to start renovations on the kitchen! I'll come home and I won't recognize it! You should build in a dog door for bandit too! I'm excited to have more counter space to cook! I really miss cooking...we still get fed here everyday, now they're starting to sign us up for lunch appointments. The Elders are really impressed Sister Sims and I ride our bikes as much as we do, the members too. They say its good for the community to see us and recognize us. I haven't fallen off my bike yet Dad, don't worry you taught me well. The other day i was leading and I swore Sister Sims was right behind me but when I pulled into our driveway there was no sign of her! Shoot, not everyone is as blessed as I am to have such powerful legs, I left her in the dust and had to go back. I guess I'll just have to look back more often...
In 3 days I'll hit my 3 month mark and I'll only have 15 months left! Whoa that's crazy! It feels like I just got here...We have transfers next Wednesday and calls come Saturday so i could be getting a new area. This area's awesome but it's really difficult to find people! and my zone leaders are awesome!!! (typed by elder oldham) We taught the Calaways today! I LOVE their family. I told them to hang a picture of me on their wall next to their kids and Kim said "Okay bring the picture next week!" I'm so blessed to be able to teach them. Earlier in the week we taught them about the priesthood and I was worried they didn't understand it exactly...kaylee got home from camp and had the stomach flu ( apparently they had a break out of it at camp and had to send 30 girls home) We asked her if she would like a priesthood blessing and she accepted. We asked the elders to give the blessing and they did a great job explaining the process using james 5:14-15. Each of the daughters got a blessing (the other had an asthma  attack the night before) by the end of the blessings the whole family was in tears! They all got to see the priesthood in action! yes! I love the priesthood! This morning however, we taught them the lesson on chastity. Their oldest son is gay and has a boyfriend so we're a little concerned about him...so pray for Conner!
I'm out of time but I'm going to spend a little time writing letters this week! so look for those!

Greg McKewon

Hey Everyone!

This week was pretty great! We had a special training on Friday given from Greg McKewon! He's a Wall Street Journal Best Selling Author and he's incredible! President Gelwix has great connections and asked him to meet with us for a day! He gave us an all day training on Existentialism and basically its changed the goals of my mission! We learned to go back to the basics and meet the essential goals the Lord wants us to accomplish. We often as missionaries progress a millimeter in a million different directions but if we channel all our energy to the one goal the Lord has for us we'll progress at a rapid pace. I think my favorite part of the training was the way he talks! Hes originally from England so he's got an accent, I could just listen to him all day...good thing I did!
At the end of the day President got up and spoke about the goals the Lord has for this mission and how great they are, one elder stood up and said "President I support you in your goals but even more I support the Lord". Another Elder stood up and said the same thing, then two more! Eventually all of us were standing re-committing ourselves to the work and to the Lord, I think just about everyone was crying in the end, the spirit moved us all! I love the Lord and I love President Gelwix and I'm here to serve them both! (but mainly the Lord).
Sister Sims and I also got to teach our family of 6! We love their family so much and we are so grateful for the opportunity to teach with the spirit! this week they committed to keep the Word of Wisdom and to keep the Sabbath Day Holy. I wish everyone got to teach this family because they're just so great! One of their daughters is even going to Girls Camp this week! We've still kept their baptism date for the 13th of July so they can be baptized as a whole family!
Sister Sims and I rode our bikes a ton this week, we feel that it's the best way to talk to everyone. One particular day Sister Sims was struggling with keeping balance on her bike, she ended up falling three times in a row! I had to get off my bike because I laughed so hard!
I love you all so much! I've got to go because my companion and I are in charge of the Zone activity today!

.

Hey Everyone!
Things are still moving along in Fresno! Sister Sims and I have so much fun with one another! We push one another to reach our greatest potentials! She's told me a few times that she'll often forget shes training me! We're like co-companions? We had a Zone Conference this past week and we begged President to keep us together! I don't think he believed us until we told his wife too! Sister Sims and I are doing great though.
This week was a little more rough, our investigators cancelled on us and were unable to attend sacrament! NO! That's the worst! For this week we're hoping to schedule multiple appointments to teach because it's summer for the kids out here.
Speaking of summer! Sister Sims and I rode our bikes again! It was 109! Blazing Inferno! A member said when she saw us riding down the road she almost pulled over and called President to complain! While we were riding I was in the lead and I saw this pretty stick! As I got closer I thought "that's not a stick! that's a snake! Ah!" I was too close to stop so I ran over it with my bike screaming! As soon as Sister Sims saw what I was screaming about she screamed bloody murder! We both took a minute to come back from that one!  This morning while taking out our laundry we both froze when we saw this enormous wolf spider! It was the size of a sticky note! That giant! gross...what was the Lord thinking making all these creepy crawlies?
Well our little pranks with the Elders ended...they surrendered! After we put tuna in their car they knew they couldn't beat us but it was a good time! One of the Zone leaders told me we were his favorite pair of sisters and thats a genuine complement because his biggest pet peeve is sister missionaries! We love the Elders in our zone, this week we played dodge ball and set up barricades with tables! no mercy is shown there...
I've got to get back to playing in there but thanks mom for the CD's! I've been playing them for everyone and they all want a copy! They're such great  CDs! I love you all!

Miracle Week

Hey Everyone!

Wow missions are amazing! Did you know that!? So amazing. I'm learning more here than I ever have in all my life! I am constantly striving to change into the woman the Lord wants me to be!
This week we saw an incredible miracle that makes me want to cry just thinking about it! Our family of 6 accepted our baptismal invitation! They'll be baptized on July 13th! What a miracle! The only bad news is that transfers are on July 3rd! If one of us are transferred we wont get to see the baptisms! The family is so incredible and I love them all so much! They really are coming to understand that the gospel is true! What an amazing blessing it is to baptize a whole family! The Lord has prepared children and Sister Sims and I will find them! On the flip side we had to drop an investigator! How sad! He told us he wouldn't ever read the Book of Mormon the way he reads the bible. We'll still have his fellowship stop by and we'll do the same, just not as regularly.
Speaking of fellowship I love the members here! Such giving people! Always doing their best! Always willing to help! I know I will keep in contact with some of these families after my mission. We had our dinner appointment cancel yesterday and instead of going hungry we had two dinner appointments! (don't be worried I'm still under 120 lbs!) We still have about 10 appointments a week with members (not including dinner appointments) and we know they are really trying to find us referrals to teach! They really are the key to missionary work! We're still tracting about 2 hours a day with no luck, but we've been biking a lot! We biked 19 miles this week! We stop and talk to everyone! Biking is the best way to go when you want to do some street contacting!
I've got to run! Sorry this email is so short but our zone wants to play some dodgeball!

LOVE YOU ALL!

A week of teaching

Hey Everyone!

Things are slowly moving here in California, but they're moving! Sister Sims and I learned this week the power of having members present in our lessons! This past Monday we picked up three new investigators! A little girl and her parents! We'll be teaching them the second discussion tonight (with a member!). They've accepted the story of Joseph Smith and we've asked them to read from the Book of Mormon but they're so busy we're a little worried they won't make time. Our other family of 6 investigating came to church! We taught them a lesson Saturday (well half the family, three were out of town) and it was so wonderful! We again had two members come and as they bore their testimony of the Book of Mormon the mother and daughter began to cry! It was great! The spirit was so strong! So of course we invited them to church the next day! I had to speak on Sunday to cover the Youth speaker (I spoke on Patriarchal Blessing) so it was a perfect opportunity to ask investigators to come! and they did! Our members loved the meetings and it was their second time coming to church so they could be baptized! We still have to set a date but I'm determined they will be baptized this transfer! Its so exciting! We unfortunately had to drop two single men we were teaching so that was kind of disappointing. One wouldn't make time for us to teach him because he was always out of town and the other fought the book of Mormon. We'll still check in on them from time to time.
Sister Sims and I are doing much better as a companionship. I've learned that its incredibly easy to tease her and so now I do it non stop....but she's a great sport about it. We just poke fun at each other all day long. This week we pulled up to a inactive's house and Sister Sims started tromping through their lawn. Before I could stop her she turned around and said "I think I just stepped in dog crap". Sure enough she did! And that's why we use sidewalks Sister Sims! I'll never let her forget it. She's discovered my competitive nature this week too. In fact she said to a member this week "Some times I feel like I'm winning... but then Sister LeStarge will say something and end up winning! I can never beat her!" Haha! Not only do I carry the LeStarge name on my tag but also our family spirit! It was the best complement she's ever given me! (don't worry though it's a light fun competitive spirit nothing that would hurt our companionship).
I love my mission and I can't believe I've already made it through my first transfer. I know that Jesus is the Living Christ and my Savior. I love teaching the people here about who he is! I know that He loves me and is only going to bless me!

Transfers

We taught our family of 6 this week, the Calaways. We extended a baptismal invitation to them for June 15 and they got a little scared. They said a date is a lot of pressure for them. The father is about to go on a 6 week trip for work (he's in motion pictures) but he said he'd like to take the lessons with his family via Skype  They didn't reject our invitation and said if they knew the book of Mormon was true it wouldn't even be a question if they needed to get baptized! So we're still hoping to get them baptized next month! I took Dad's advice for our Filipino investigator! and found her a Filipino member! So we'll have her come with us to our investigators house! We have our first baptism this Saturday! Its for a little boy named Brayden, hes 10. Pray he gets baptized this Saturday! We keep having to push back his date...well I love the work! I'm so glad I'm so glad I'm here, I'm like putty in the Lords hands and he's shaping me into the person I've always wanted to become!
I pray for you each day and I hope you feel the Lord blessing you through my work. I love you both so much!

Love Sister LeStarge.

Oh shoot I titled my last e-mail as transfers and forgot to talk about them! Well I made it through my first transfer! I'm not going anywhere! Dry Creek is a great place to be! I hear its one of the wealthiest places in the whole mission (no wonder I get fed every day and get free retainers!) I'm super bummed because my favorite Elders are going home! How sad? We also had our districts mixed up! I think the reason is because one of the districts elder and sisters got a little too close...one of the sisters told me the elders made them breakfast and brought it too them! What on this planet earth goes through their heads that would make them think its okay to do that? they've also bought them lunch several times...but I'm super excited for our new district! Elder Sims (just like my companion but not related) the black elder will be joining our district and hes SUPER funny so I can't wait! Lets see how long I stay here!

-Love Sister LeStarge
Here's and update of my week!

It was such as busy week and I learned so much!

Monday: Preparation Day! I can't believe how fast this day flies by! We wake up at 6 :30 and throw in laundry before running (yes we're required to run here!) then we get ready for the day and switch laundry again, its such a blessing to have free laundry! After studies we usually run around getting groceries  cleaning our home and washing our car. Then it's off to the church to e-mail and play sports! After that we home to eat dinner with the family we live with (which we do every Monday). Last Monday after Dinner we presented a Family Home Evening Lesson to a Family at 7 and another at 8. We taught a lesson on faith using the Tea Bag trick. The Kids in both families were pretty amazed! I love the Members of the ward, they all have such an excitement to share the gospel!

Tuesday: Exchanges with Sister Otterstrom! We all know how much I love her! We had such a great day covering both our areas and we saw a wonderful miracle. We stopped by a mans house in her area who had previously met with Elders, but for whatever reason the man didn't like one of the Elders and told them to never come back. Sister Otterstrom felt very strongly about visiting this man. We pulled in his driveway and he was sitting on his porch, he let us pull up some chairs and talk with him. He said he loved Mormons and respected them greatly, his only struggle was with Joseph Smith. We cleared up a few confusing things and committed him to come church. Before we left we bore testimony to him that God loves all of us and He knows us all by name. The man (who was a retired Marine, big and tough) began to weep! Then Sister Otterstrom lost it too! The spirit was so strong! After we left we pulled over to give a prayer of gratitude and I began to cry! I love Sister Otterstrom and the spirit we have together.

Wednesday: Zone Meeting! I love my zone! As I've said before I love the Elders and I love the Sisters. We were taught by the Zone Leaders how to give proper correction to our companion. I have to admit I was given a fair warning by my sibling of what a mission would be like and I feel like I was pretty prepared, but no one told me how much correction you would give or receive! I feel that I take it very well but I'm still learning to give it properly. That night we tried to visit one of our investigators but he wasn't home so we left him an assignment. We hope to baptize him this month but its up to his mom and grandparents to pick the date.

Thursday: Sisters Conference! The mission held a special sisters conference for all the sisters serving in the mission.  We heard from President and his wife (I wish I could express how incredible they both are). We had great counsel given and we were so uplifted! (except I forgot my notes or I would tell you more!)

Friday: Exchanges again! I got to work with Hermana Wilson! Shes going home in two weeks and she's so incredible! She's exactly obedient but so super laid back I looked like a worry wart! She and I found a new investigator together! He's a retired cop we've been visiting for a while now but we taught him a lesson and set up and appointment with him for tomorrow! We also taught three member families that day and received three referrals from members! It was pretty incredible for our area!

Saturday: was super boring because all we did was weekly planning...but we did visit 2 of our 3 referrals and set up appointments to come back! At night we went to our wards "Youth auction" the youth set up a night auctioning off all kinds of things to raise money for their activities. They donate and the members donate all kinds of products and services! One sister is a professional photographer and she auctioned off a free photo shoot for a family. Another Sister is a nanny and auctioned off a weekend of babysitting. Someone brought a tandem bike and auctioned off that. It was a pretty successful night!

Sunday: I got to talk to my family! But my biggest regret is forgetting to wish my mom a Happy Mothers Day! I just got so excited I forgot all together. Happy belated Mothers Day mom!

I love this gospel and I'm so happy the Lord is growing in me!

Love
Sister LeStarge

I'm so excited for this upcoming week!

Hello!!
This week has been so awesome! I really can't believe how fast the weeks go by here! The days are long, but time just slips between my fingers like sand. I love the work and I love my mission!! I'm so blessed to be in Fresno! This week we had a Trainer Trainee meeting and it changed my mission! President Gelwix, his assistants and the Ccoordinating Sisters gave us our training. I have deep love and respect for President Glewix, he was truly called to lead this mission and he does a fantastic job with it. His wife is so incredible too. Behind every great man is an even greater woman and Sister Gelwix is proof of that. She is full of spunk and personality while she loves and cares for all of us. While at our trainer trainee meeting President had time to meet with Sister Sims and I. He gave us counsel on the struggles we've been having and its changed my mission! He warned me of pride and the destruction it can bring to our companionship and future relationships. He warned Sister Sims of inconsistency, that it only confuse and misguide me. Together he counseled us to ask for correction multiple times a day. We've been striving our best to work with his counsel and its working! Sister Sims and I have had a great week getting along and are learning to laugh! The best part of meeting with the President was the promise he gave to us. He promised us that if we harness our personalities we could be the greatest companionship in the mission. What an amazing promise! We're working our hardest to fulfill it!
This upcoming we is going to be so busy! I can't wait! Sister Sims will be at leadership training tomorrow so I get to be companions with....drumb roll please....SISTER OTTERSTROM! (my MTC companion) I can't wait!! It's going to be the BEST DAY EVER!! I can't even describe how much I love Sister Otterstrom! I've said it before and I'll say it again, She and I will be best friends long after our missions. We'll be covering her area and mine but it shouldn't be too hard because they use to be a combined area. We've got several appointments set up so we'll be busy! On WWednesday we've got Zone meetings, Thursday is a special Sisters Cconference and exchanges (until Saturday morning), Friday we've got 4 hours of service, Saturday we've got a mission service project and Sunday is Mothers Day! Such a busy week ahead of me! So many appointments! Today Sister Sims and I get to Teach a family of 6! It's our second lesson with them and we're so excited! They have 4 children ages 21 to 12.  We can't wait to share the Gospel with them! This week we got 2 more investigators and 2 potentials!! That's great for our area but extremely low compared to the rest of our mission! I know that the Lord has people he wants me to find and teach! I love my mission and I'm working smart!

My Birthday!

This was sent 4/30/13
Hello Friends and Family!
Wow I had a such a busy week! Zone Conference, Birthday, Temple trip, and teaching my first lesson!
Zone Conference: Was incredible! I took some notes but they didn't do justice! I love President Gelwix, his counsel is inspired and he knows exactly what we need. Four zones met  together, Fresno, Fresno North (my zone), Fresno West, and Fresno East. I think we had about 80-100 missionaries. President addressed the topic of urgency. He started by telling us about his "Mission President Conference" he went to with all the California missions. L. Tom Perry was there and gave President Gelwix inspired goals just for the Fresno mission. We are to:
1. Each companion have 20 investigators each.
2. Teach 20 lessons a week.
3. Baptize every month.
Its pretty intimidating considering my companion and I only have 7 investigators (a family of 6 and a woman). but president explained how its all a matter of faith. He called us to repentance for being disconnected to the Lord and His will. Sister Sims and I pray way more now! My favorite thing from zone conference though was a quote President said about urgency. He told us a story of his Highland Rugby team loosing the Championships of 1999. He explained the terrible loss of the team and how a young man (who was a senior) struggled to accept the loss. Presidents quote was:
"At the end of your mission you will take off your tag for the last time"
It hit me that although I'm still new to the mission, at one point I will take off my tag for the last time. This makes me want to run door to door! spreading the gospel as fast as I can! It was a pretty great conference though.
MY BIRTHDAY: MY BIRTHDAY WAS THE BEST DAY I'VE HAD SO FAR! Such an excellent day!! As you've probably noticed I didn't have preparation day on my birthday, that's because we had a temple trip scheduled for Tuesday so Tuesday became our preparation day. But on my birthday District meeting took place (we meet as a zone first) so I got to see everyone I love! And I LOVE MY ZONE! Everyone was so sweet and kind to make my birthday special. Sister Otterstrom my MTC companion made me a card and had everyone in the zone sign it. The Zone Leaders gave me a $15 gift card for Cold Stone and the Elders in the Zone made me a card with and AWESOME quote and a $15 gift card for Subway. How sweet are they?! After District meeting we typically go out to eat for lunch and I picked a place called The Habit, a pretty good burger place. An Elder picked up my lunch and a Sister bought me Ice-Cream! Wooo! I love free birthday lunches! I sat with Elder Wilson, Elder Sims and Sister Otterstrom and had a great time. Those missionaries will be some of my best friends after my mission. After that the other sisters in the zone took me over to Cold Stone for more Ice-Cream (Its my birthday, I can have 2 ice-creams?). We visited an older Sister who lives alone after lunch and taught her the first discussion (shes been a member for 24 years but we're practicing the discussions on our members). We then ran over to and investigators house for the biggest surprise a day! Her name is Lily and she's Catholic and when we arrived at her door she had a whole Birthday Dinner set up for me! The crazy part is I've only  met her 1 time!! That's right 1 time! Last Thursday we set up and appointment to teach her a lesson on Monday and my companion mentioned it was my birthday! Not only did Lily make me a whole dinner but she bought me a cake at the nicest bakery in town, that said "Happy Birthday Sister L"! Poor sweet woman couldn't even remember my name! We taught her a lesson one prayer and committed her to read the Book of Mormon and Pray about it. We also set up a church tour for this Thursday. Shes incredible! After our 1st dinner with Lily we headed over to our appointment dinner with the family we're living with! I was warned I would eat two dinners but I didn't believe it! Its funny how when you tell people its your birthday they automatically give you food. The very best part of my birthday was the package I got to open from my mom!!! SHE'S THE BEST! THE LITERAL BEST!  I wish I could have recorded myself opening it because I squealed like a pig with excitement. She sent me a beautiful new bag! (that feels like butter). How awesome is my family? Very awesome. I loved my birthday, its a day I'll tell people about for years.
I've got to go my e-mailing time is out!

First Week in the Field!!

This was sent 4/15/13

Hello everyone!

Wow can you believe I've been out for 3 weeks already?! I love it! I am especially grateful for today! Preparation day! I was only allowed one in the MTC so today was needed! I've given 1 1/2 hours to email so hopefully that's enough time to tell you all about this weeks experiences! I guess the best approach would be to tackle by topics again, round 2!

Leaving the MTC: What an amazing experience I had at the MTC! I LOVED IT! So amazing, but I wouldn't have stayed there for another day! I was ready to leave. Throughout the two weeks I was there I struggled to feel the spirit. I felt good but really struggled with inviting the spirit into my teaching. Finally on our last day the spirit poured out upon me! Our teacher asked us to do an activity he did while in the MTC, promising that if we took it seriously we would be strengthened. Our goal was to read 1 Nephi 1 with our companions in 5 minute shifts, then as we read share what insights and our testimony as prompted to do so. I read first and after 5 minutes Sister Otterstrom couldn't read because tears were brought to her eyes! Once she got going I lost it and started crying! Lehi is such an amazing man and put great faith in the Lord. After crying through the chapter we had to teach our investigator. He committed to  be baptized and as soon as I returned to our classroom I felt overwhelmed by the spirit and balled! Wept! Sobbed! With a smile on my face! I was so happy! I'm sure the Elders thought I was a wacko! It was the greatest day of my mission so far.
The next day we woke up at 3 am and for the airport! Elder Gayan and Elder Wilson (who I believe will be some of my best friends after my mission) entertained me the whole ride! I was crying I laughed so hard (which happened just about everyday with those two) In the airport I got to talk to  My Dad! (sorry mom...) how great of a comfort it was to hear someone's voice I recognized.
Our flights to Fresno were awesome! I was one of the lucky missionaries who got to sit by a real life person! I shared small messages from the gospel with two gentlemen. It gave me a confidence boost that I can do this!

THE FIELD: Fresno is beautiful! I CAN'T believe my parents never took the time to take me to Cali. That's rude. The first day was taken over by house keeping business. The first meal we had was at the mission home and it was exciting and so sad! Exciting because we were ready to go but so sad because it was my last meal with my MTC district. I'll miss them so much (although most of them are in my Zone so I get to see them once a week).

DRY CREEK: What a great name for my first area right? We're thinking of re naming it Waters of Mormon. I love this area though! Its tough, we have the lowest baptism  numbers in our mission. We have no investigators but we plan to revive the members and get them excited about missionary work. We hope they can give us some referrals. The houses are similar to my own home (as far as class goes). Most people aren't interested n  our message as we go tracting but I know we'll get someone eventually! I love the members here though, it reminds me of my own home ward (which I miss more than anything!) We've been given a car because our area is so infested with fields but we also have a bike. Its a beautiful bike that unfortunately I haven't been able to ride yet. The Sisters aren't allowed to go tracting after dark so usually we drive around to visit members. The work is tough here but that's what a mission is all about right? Our mission president likes to emphasize that we don't work hard here in the California Fresno mission, we work smart.

MY TRAINER: Sister Sims! She's from Valparaiso! Kinda...she's moved around a time or two. She's awesome though, exactly what I need. She teaches me everything but above all she teaches me patience! I've been praying to have more patience for years so here she is! She's just as tiny as I am! Well sorta...but we can swap clothes! She's been out for 9 months and trained 3 other Sisters. She's really understanding and helps me through any mistakes I might make. I love her.

MY MISSION PRESIDENT: President Larry Gelwix! Hes SO AWESOME. I'm terrified of him. BUT HES SO AWESOME! Such an inspired man and so loving. He's a couch through and through (which is why I think he's so intimidating). He's speaks so powerfully and really hits home to inspire and uplift us. I love his wife too. Behind every great man is a great woman and that's so true! She is wonderful.

I LOVE my mission. Its really the best thing that's ever happened to me. I know that this is where the Lord needs me. I have faith that in time he will reveal to me why I'm here. I love my savior Jesus Christ he is my redeemer and the only way I can get back home to my Father in Heaven.

From the MTC...

(This was sent while Julie was in the MTC...4/4/13)

Hello Family and Friends!

Wow what a busy week at the MTC! I've decided the best way to go about telling you what I've been up to is by topic, so here goes! (also if I mention anyone's name just know I asked them for permission first!)

THE MCT: I love it! I only wish you could be here with me to have the wonderful experiences I've been so blessed to to be involved in. I am truly honored to have the opportunity to prepare for my mission here. It is so easy to feel the spirit of the Lord around so many incredible missionaries! Its is as crowded as they say, on the day I entered there were over 600 missionaries arriving, with record numbers of how even the split was (around 300 sisters and 300 elders) I don't know how many are here exactly but they tell me over 3,000. Its expected that by July they will have 8,000. The MTC has rented out a BYU apartment complex next door to house the incoming missionaries because they just don't have space! In each room you get cozy with the 6 people living in your room. Meals are especially crazy. I don't know how many of us eat at once but I would guess around 1,000. The horror stories you hear about the food are all lies, the food is pretty average but not gross and no one gets sick (if they do its in there head). My only complaint is that my meal times are so close together so I eat a big breakfast and mainly snack the rest of the day. I really do wish everyone of you was here though to have an experience like I am.

MY COMPANION: Sister Otterstrom! I love her! How blessed am I to have my first companion be so great! She is as easy going as I am so we get along perfectly! We feel the spirit when we teach investigators because we have no contention. She has huge amounts of patience for me and I try my hardest to give as I can to her.  She has a cosmetology license and does my hair every morning (isn't she sweet?!) I have truly been blessed to love and serve such a wonderful daughter of God.

MY DISTRICT: I LOVE THEM! I can't even put into words how amazing my district is! there is a deep love we have for each other and I feel they are my family here. Our district is a little smaller than most with 9 missionaries total (4 sisters and 5 elders, yes there is a trio in there!) So i'm sure that's why we're able to love and care for each other so much. I am convinced that I knew these missionaries as my brothers and Sisters before I came to earth. The trio of Elders are going to Sacramento California and the rest of us are going to Fresno! Yesterday we met a few more companionships of Elders going to Fresno as well but I'm not sure if too many more sisters are going to our area. Our district had the COOLEST experience ever last Friday that we will never forget.  Our district was chosen to participate in a special training. We learned that the curriculum that will be taught to the new English speaking missionaries, since we're only here for 2 weeks now the leaders have decided to condense the lesson material into shorter lessons (the lessons we learn, not the lessons we teach.) We acted as the gunea pigs for the whole MTC, not to mention the rest of the incoming missionaries entering the in future. As a part of our training we were taught how to give the first discussion in full length, down to one minute (in case thats all the time we'll have to teach someone we stop on our bikes!) Our training lasted all day and was so worth it! Before this training we all felt so lost! We found ourselves wondering if this is how confused we'd be or whole mission. We had no clue what to study, how to teach or even where to begin. Our special training though gave us wave of excitement to preach the Gospel! After our training I wanted to shout from the mountain tops! Run door to door! Proclaim our message of happiness to all the world! I think what made the training so great was our teacher, the MTC's head missionary trainer (I don't think that's his official title) He was incredible. I love my district they are so amazing. I now feel that I can be a great missionary.

What I love: I love this Gospel! I love the MTC! I love that I finally understand why I'm here! I love the doctrine of Jesus Christ! I love to learn! I love my Savior Jesus Christ! I love My Father in Heaven most of all.

Please feel free to write me! I would love letters or packages. My story about those goes like this: On our third day in the MTC my companion got 3 packages! 3 PACKAGES! I'm sure you could imagine how sad I felt walking back to our room carrying nothing while my companion had her arms full. However, later that day I received a package slip! YES! Someone in this world did love me! We raced back to the mail room only to discover it was closed until monday! MONDAY!? How rude. I waited out all of Easter to get my Easter package the next day. My dear sweet mother does love me though because she sent me a package (which had everything I love it it). I'll be in the MTC for another week then its out to the field! Send me letters through dearelder.com and I'll get the letter that very day!

I Will Change the World.

Hello everyone!
Well this is it! I leave tomorrow for Utah where I will spend my last few days waiting to enter the MTC! (I guess that's why this post is going to be so long!) Its been a busy day gathering all my final things, but I would like to take a moment to brag about how incredible I am at packing! I come from a whole family of great packers, I think its in our DNA. As many of you know missionaries only get two suitcases and a carry-on to carry all their items for their whole mission! Three pieces of luggage hold all my clothes, shoes and personal items for 18 months! I managed to fit all of my clothes and shoes into one suitcase! And may I add that its under the 50 lb weight limit! I'm sure your probably thinking I brought nothing but let me tell you, I am no light packer! I managed

16 Shirts
10 Pairs of shoes.
10 Dresses
9 Skirts
6 Cardigans
Some workout clothes/pajamas
Underclothing
and accessories.

Now don't go thinking I'm some kind of clothing hoarder! Each one of those pieces of clothing is essential, a necessity really. I spent a few days trying on every possibly outfit I could think of and took pictures (to create little photo album) so I wouldn't forget all the possibilities I have! If I counted right, I've got somewhere around 80 combinations. Most of those clothes are basic enough to be mixed and matched together, so for any girls struggling with clothes my advice is to purchase the classics!

I thought it would be appropriate to leave my farewell talk I gave last Sunday (March 17) as my goodbye!

Mission Farewell Talk
Good morning Brothers and Sisters, I’m excited to be here today to speak to you before I leave next week.  The 1st counselor  asked Diana to speak a few weeks ago, and as many of you have seen you can’t find one of us without the other around here, so  when he approached her instead I though “oh what sweet relief", but of course when he asked her he had the perfect opportunity to also ask me to speak, but I’m grateful that although I’m only about 20 hours older than Diana I get to cover for the youth speaker.
Today I’d like to talk to you about the work I’ll be doing for the next 18 months, I’d like to share with you a story that will give me hope and inspiration while I’m serving in Fresno.  The story I’d like to share with you is about a young man who changed the world, but before I share his story I’d like to tell you about an experience I had while in my early years of young women’s. I was maybe 13 or 14, about the age you would start high school, when one Sunday my leaders said “You will change the world”.  Now they didn’t say you as in pointing to the Young women in general but you as in you Julie LeStarge.  My first thought was “Oh you poor sweet woman, your putting your faith in the wrong person. I’m 5’0 tall, with glasses, braces and breakouts on my face, there’s no way I’ll be changing the world any time soon.”
At that time I thought you had to have 3 things to make any kind of difference in the world and those were : wealth, some grand amount of money to get you noticed, fame or popularity, which I didn’t have in fact there were people at the end of my neighborhood who didn’t have a clue who I was. And the last thing was some kind of authority, like the President. When I think of someone who has all of these qualities I think of someone like Oprah Winfrey…who I am nothing like…
As I mentioned I have none of those things, but I found a story about a young man who changed the world without any of those, in fact he was quite the opposite and his story goes like this:
“There once was a young man who was quite ordinary.  He lived in a normal town, in a modest house, with a normal family, and he had normal friends. He attended a public school where he learned ordinary subjects and received average grades. He struggled with typical boy things such as who he would ask to the next school dance, where he would attend college, and how he would ever show up to work on time. Overall the young man was your typical teenage boy, except for one thing that made him a little more extraordinary and that was his faith, you see he belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and he had something special about him. Whether he had worked his whole childhood to be this way or he woke up one morning and made the choice this young man had made up his mind that he was going to be an example of his faith. As many of you know, you can’t go very long being an example of our faith without going unnoticed. Before long he had caught the attention of two people, the first was his younger brother who had said “ He was always making the right choices, he was bigger than me, stronger than me and my hero, he was my older brother and I wanted to be just like him”
The second person to notice him was a young woman with whom he worked with.  After some time they became friends and she joined our church. Like many young men in our faith this young man chose to serve a full time mission, which brought him to the other side of the world.  He served honorably and returned home. Soon after his arrival home he proposed marriage to the young woman he brought into the church, who had been regularly sending him letters throughout his mission. Years later the couple ended up with 5 beautiful children….I think many of you know where I’m going with this story…those 5 children grew up in the church and each served a full time mission.
Now that I’ve told you the story of this young man and his family I’d like to think many of you are asking “So what?” well here’s the part where I tell you how this young man changed the world. The first thing he did was decide to live his life as an example of his faith, which resulted in the conversion of a young woman.  The second thing he did was serve a mission. As we all know missionaries change not only their own lives on their mission but also the lives of those whom they serve. So in the story of our young man let’s say he changed the lives of 100 people. Now directly he maybe only baptized between 1 and 10 people…but thinks of their future generations! We have no idea exactly how many people’s lives changed as a result of his efforts. Then we look at his family, his 5 children all served a full time mission, so there’s another couple hundred people whose lives were potentially changed!  I’m sure you’ve caught on to my story and realize the young man from my story is my dad and the young woman he converted is my mom.
I’d like to compare the story of my family to the story in the scriptures of Abinadi. If you’re familiar with the story of Abinadi you’ll know that he was trying to call the wicked King Noah to repentance, he did what the Lord had asked of him but as we all know he was tragically put to death. He died without knowing that he had any converts but all it took was one person, Alma. Alma believed Abinadi’s message, changed his life, and brought this crowd of people to baptism, Which practically created this whole nation of righteous people! And all it took was one person! Now of course my family wasn’t put to death or anything like Abinadi but like him my dad, siblings and I have no idea how many people’s lives we’ll have changed.
Before I end I’d like to share a scripture with you from Alma 23, Aaron, Omner, Himni and Ammon are teaching the people of Lamoni and this is what it says about their teaching, in verse 5:
And athousands were brought to the knowledge of the Lord, yea, thousands were brought to believe in the btraditions of the Nephites; and they were taught the crecords and prophecies which were handed down even to the present time.
We see that from the efforts of these 4 men that thousands were bought into the gospel! That’s so amazing!!! They truly changed the world! I’m not saying anyone has to be like these great missionaries, you don’t have to be like my dad and have 5 children who all sere missions but what I am suggesting is you be a missionary by being an example and perhaps you’ll plant a seed for someone’s heart for them to become a member later.
I love the work that I will be doing. I love the Gospel! I know that I won’t be the greatest missionary, not even close, but I know that I will be an instrument in the Lords hands and he will use me to change the world by planting seeds in His children’s hearts. Amen.
